Homelessness is a very big problem in the United States today. Although it is hard to get a solid count, estimates range from 150,000-200,000 at the very least to possibly more 700,000. -Wikipedia.
The causes for
homelessness are varied, including but not limited to:
* Lack of affordable housing
* Low paying jobs
* Substance abuse and lack of needed services
* Mental illness and lack of needed services
* Domestic violence
* Unemployment
* Irresponsible life style
* Poverty
* Prison release and re-entry into society
* Change and cuts in public assistance
* Natural Disasters
Whether homeless by circumstance or by fault of their own, these are groups of people who desperately need the assistance of others. Unfortunately there are many out there who have no patience for the homeless and struggling. In fact, many cities have become so frustrated with the homeless problem, they have resorted to some methods that frankly seem a bit inhumane in dealing with this struggling population.

Exhibit 2: Cold-Hearted Tent Slashing Cops
Certainly there must be better way of dealing with the homeless population than such things. The following are some innovative and thoughtful attempts to make life better for those who can not get off the streets..
Exhibit 1: Homeless Friendly Benches
Architect Sean Godsell, has installed a new project showcasing an idea that does the exact opposite of the anti-homeless benches seen above. Godsell envisioned benches built to be a shelter for the homeless. The bench lifts up, underneath which is a woven steel mattress, and a compartment for blankets.

Exhibit 2: Helpful Advertising
The Salvation Army has launched an interesting advertising campaign that not only get the word out, but manages to fulfill its goal of aiding the poor and homeless at the same time.

Exhibit 3: Recycled Air
The ParaSite Project is the idea of Artist Michael Rakowitz. Essentially, the ideas was to provide portable, temporary shelter, the relies on easily accessible goods, and uses the urban environment. Rakowitz solution are these air tents made of plastic bags that provide heated shelter via the exhaust from HVAC units. You can read more about it here.

Exhibit 4: Bumvertising
Homelessness, Coats, and Advertising. I'm sorry the video is not in english, but I'm sure you will get the gist of what is going on. These nuns are giving away free jackets that are paid for through advertising on the back of the jacket. This so called "bumvertising" has been the subject of some controversy in the US, but it seems to be something worth looking into. For more info visit bumvertising.com:
